President Biden’s Executive Order to pause new fracking leases on federal lands is a major step in the right direction to draw down carbon emissions. On Earth day, it is expected Biden will announce a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030, based on 2005 emission levels. The EO makes clear the urgency we face.  “There is little time left to avoid setting the world on a dangerous, potentially catastrophic, climate trajectory.  Responding to the climate crisis will require both significant short-term global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and net-zero global emissions by mid-century or before.”  New Mexico is no exception.

Governor Lujan-Grisham has requested a waiver from Biden’s EO in recognition of both the actions her Administration has already taken to address climate change and the potential fiscal impact such a fracking pause might have on the state budget. This short-sighted response to the climate chaos bearing down on all of us must be forcefully rejected.
Obtaining a waiver for NM would be a disaster for our climate and front-line communities.

Join us in sending a clear message to Governor Grisham and President Biden that NM must not seek a waiver on new fracking leases on public lands.
