Act Now: Hold Polluters Accountable, Protect Our Water, & Advance Energy Democracy

Across New Mexico, young people and community members are standing up to demand accountability – from the oil and gas corporations profiting off pollution, the private equity giants trying to take control of our utilities, and the decision-makers who continue to put industry profits before the people.

Over the next two weeks, we have important opportunities to make our voices heard and continue fighting for the livable future we deserve: one rooted in equity, justice, and community control.

We need your help to hold polluters accountable for the mess they've created, stop industry from dumping toxic fracking waste into our lands and waters, and fight back against out-of-state billionaire buyouts of our utilities by advancing the opposite: a local, community-controlled energy system.

Read on to learn more, take action, and help us keep our future where it belongs: in the hands of our communities.

LAST CHANCE: TAKE ACTION TODAY TO URGE THE OCD TO MAKE POLLUTERS PAY!

ree

🚨 It took over $46,000,000 to plug and reclaim just 360 wells abandoned by industry polluters in New Mexico – and there are over 60,000 more what will eventually need to be plugged. 🚨

Over 1,700 wells have already been fully abandoned in New Mexico, a crisis caused by the oil and gas companies that are allowed to drill oil wells, rake in the profits, and walk away – leaving our communities to deal with the resulting pollution – and the millions of dollars in cleanup costs.

On October 20th, the Oil Conservation Commission began a critical hearing to address abandoned oil and gas wells across our state – and today is our last chance to speak up in support of proposed amendments to our state's bonding rules brought by the Western Environmental Law Center and frontline Díne and San Juan Basin communities that would strengthen regulation and hold industry accountable for the mess they've created.

Today, November 7th is the LAST day to submit public comment to the Oil Conservation Commission – help us urge decision-makers to adopt these proposed amendments and make polluters pay by providing a comment today using the resources below:

  • You can provide public comment in-person between 9:00 am-5:00 pm today at Pecos Hall on the first floor of the Wendell Chino building (1220 S. St. Francis Dr., Santa Fe, NM 87505)

PROTECT OUR WATER ON NOVEMBER 13TH: NO BACKROOM DEALS FOR BIG OIL!

ree

In September, a bombshell news article published by the Santa Fe New Mexican detailed how the Governor's office has been working behind closed doors to tip the scales in favor of Big Oil at the Water Quality Control Commission.

Emails in the article revealed that the Governor's Office instructed 5 Cabinet Secretaries to sit in on the WQCC and vote for the so-called WATR Alliance's industry-backed petition – a scheme that would allow oil and gas companies to dump toxic fracking waste on our land and in our water.

But since then, our movement allies have been fighting back. Three Motions for Disqualification have now been filed – calling for these compromised Commissioners to be recused from this matter and the dismissal of the WQCC's planned hearing on the WATR Alliance's petition.

And now, we have the chance to show up and hold the Commission accountable.

The Water Quality Control Commission's next meeting will take place on Thursday, November 13th at 9:00 a.m. in Santa Fe, and we need your help to pack the room and send a clear message that we won't stand for a rigged process that protects industry profits at the cost of our communities, lands, and waters.

RSVP and help us defend New Mexico's land and water at next week's Water Quality Control Commission hearing. We won't allow our voices to be ignored while industry rewrites the rules.

DO YOU LIVE IN SANTA FE COUNTY? WE NEED YOUR HELP THIS WEEK!

ree

YUCCA and our allies have spent years fighting for an energy democracy that would put power back in the hands of our communities and advance a just transition away from extraction led by our communities.

As we face proposed private equity buyouts of PNM and the New Mexico Gas Company – New Mexico's largest electric and gas utilities – that would hand control of our basic resources over to out-of-state investors who have never set foot in our communities, we have an important opportunity to move in the opposite direction: toward community ownership and local control of our energy.

On Monday, November 10th, the Santa Fe County Commission will consider a resolution to study the feasibility of piloting a county-owned Sustainable Energy Utility – a common-sense, critical step toward lowering our electricity bills and building community resilience, and advancing energy justice.

If you live or work in Santa Fe County, please join us in taking action to urge Commissioners to vote YES on the resolution – you can email the Commission using the email tool, talking points, and sample language created by our friends at Public Power NM below!
