From New Mexico to New York: Our Futures Are Not For Sale – Take Action With Us Today

This is a big week for YUCCA and our movement. This week, young people with YUCCA travel to New York for New York City Climate Week, bringing the fight for climate justice to the national stage to ensure that our voices are heard in the spaces where billionaires make decisions about our futures, demand a just transition led by our communities, and expose corporate greed.

But the fight isn't just in New York – it's also happening here at home. From the Governor's office working behind closed doors to push industry's agenda at the Water Quality Control Commission, to the proposed $165 billion Project Jupiter AI data center in Southern New Mexico and Blackstone's plans to buy out PNM, the same corporations and polluters are putting profit over people across New Mexico.

Read on for ways to support our young people as they take action in New York City, demand accountability from the Governor and the Water Quality Control Commission, and stand with Doña Ana County youth fighting back against Project Jupiter. From New Mexico to New York, this is our moment to fight back and make it clear that our futures are not for sale.

This week, young people with YUCCA are taking our fight for climate justice to New York as we travel to New York City Climate Week, joining fellow members of the No False Solutions Coalition, partners in New York, and allies across the country to bring the truth from the frontlines to the doorstep of the corporations and billionaires fueling this crisis.

Earlier this month, the No False Solutions Coalition brought community together for a powerful fundraiser at Los Jardines Institute to help make this trip possible. We're so grateful to the community members who joined us to learn more about our work and help send our delegation to New York City to confront corporate billionaires, expose industry greenwashing, and demand a just transition during an incredible night of food, music, and movement-building.

Support from community members like you is what's making it possible for us to bring our fight to the national stage – if you couldn't make it to the fundraiser earlier this month, there's still time to support our work!

In New York, we'll make it clear that young people and community members from New Mexico aren't asking for a seat at the table – we're leading the fight for a just transition. Chip in here to help us show up strong, well-resourced, and ready to make our voices heard in New York City this week. Your donation will help cover travel costs for the New Mexico No False Solutions Coalition as we share the stories of our communities in the spaces where decisions about our futures are being made.

🚨 BOMBSHELL ARTICLE REVEALS GOVERNOR'S OFFICE PRESSURE ON WQCC VOTE: HELP US DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY 🚨

🚨 A bombshell news article from the Santa Fe New Mexican just confirmed what advocates have suspected all along: the Governor's office has been working behind closed doors to tip the scales in favor of Big Oil in the Water Quality Control Commission – a body that's supposed to be independent – to help push an industry-backed petition over the finish line. 🚨

Here's a recap of how we got here, and why we should all be paying attention:

Last year, after an 18-month process that included extensive public comment, testimony from New Mexico Environment Department scientists, and independent experts, the Water Quality Control Commission ruled there was no credible scientific evidence that produced water could be safely discharged. And this summer, we won a major victory when the Commission passed a strong rule to help safeguard New Mexico's lands and waters from this toxic, radioactive fracking waste after months of pressure and organizing.

That should've been the end of it. But instead, an oil and gas industry front group calling itself the "WATR Alliance" submitted a petition to reopen the case – and now, newly-released emails show that the Governor's office leaned on cabinet heads, pressured commissioners, and lined up votes to ensure the industry petition got the green light.

In one email, the Governor's Deputy Chief Operating Officer even wrote, "As per our huddle discussion, we need everyone's support to get this over the finish line."

This outcome was decided before the Water Quality Control Commission's hearing even began – while our communities were left in the dark.

Decisions like this are supposed to be impartial, independent, and based on science, not political marching orders given behind closed doors.

That's why we're joining our allies with the Defend NM Water Coalition to demand accountability, transparency, and the dismissal of the WATR Alliance's petition until credible scientific evidence proves that the reuse and discharge of produced water is safe.

New Mexicans deserve clean water and a government that serves us, not one that conspires with industry to poison our democracy along with our water. Learn more in the Santa Fe New Mexican and join us in calling for accountability today by signing onto the petition linked below.

STOP PROJECT JUPITER: WATER FOR THE PEOPLE, NOT AI!

As we fight to demand accountability from the Governor and the Water Quality Control Commission, Youth United for Climate Crisis Action also stands in solidarity with the young people on the ground in Doña Ana County who are standing up for our water and energy future.

Project Jupiter is a massive AI data center slated for Santa Teresa, New Mexico – and tomorrow, Friday, September 19th, the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners will vote on whether or not to approve a staggering $165 billion Internal Revenue Bond (IRB) to facilitate the private venture.

Project Jupiter's developers have refused to disclose details of water sources – and their proposed "micro-grid" isn't a solution. It will do nothing but create another fossil fuel project, deepening our reliance on extraction and jeopardizing our climate future.

From Southern to Northern New Mexico, from Stack to Blackstone, we reject extractive corporate takeovers of our communities' resources.

The Stop Project Jupiter Coalition is urging their County Commissioners to stand up to the big data industry and advocate for their constituents. Visit stopprojectjupiter.org to take action, learn more, and keep up with this ongoing struggle in Southern New Mexico.
