Show Up April 14th: Stop Industry From Dumping Toxic Waste On Our Lands, Waters, and Communities

For the past two years, YUCCA and our movement allies in the Defend NM Water Coalition have been fighting back against the use of "produced water" (toxic liquid fracking waste) off the oilfield.
Together, we defeated the Strategic Water Supply Act, H.M. 45, and H.B. 207 in the Legislature, called for Secretary James Kenney's resignation after the Santa Fe New Mexican revealed that the Governor's office had been working behind closed doors to stack the deck in favor of big oil, spoke out during countless Water Quality Control Commission Meetings to urge Commissioners to reject oil and gas industry efforts to advance the reuse of produced water, and won a strong rule last summer to safeguard New Mexico's lands and waters from this toxic waste.
But now, the so-called "WATR Alliance" – an oil and gas industry front group that includes representatives from Chevron, Occidental, ConocoPhillips, and other polluters who can't wait to offload their toxic waste onto our communities – is renewing their push to spread "produced water" beyond the oilfield.
These industry insiders have been fighting to open the door to produced water reuse across New Mexico for years – and losing. Despite backing from the Governor and efforts to circumvent the legal and regulatory process, for the past two years, community members, advocates, and organizers have defeated their agenda at every turn, proving that when we come together, we can beat corporate power and industry greed.
Now, we need your help to do it again on April 14th.
Earlier this month, the WATR Alliance filed a new petition with the Water Quality Control Commission that would allow industry to dump toxic fracking waste onto our lands, waters, and communities, attempting to force produced water reuse through a rushed rulemaking process despite an incomplete petition, a proposal that would bail out industry giants while doing little to address New Mexico's water shortage, and no credible scientific evidence that fracking waste reuse is safe for our environment or communities at scale.
As our movement allies at New Energy Economy wrote last week, "Until the toxic contaminants in produced water and the treatment byproducts created during the process of treatment have been positively identified and standards for human health have been set, there is no reason for New Mexicans to allow our water and health to be put at risk for the benefit of private industry profit."
🚨 That's why we're organizing to pack the Water Quality Control Commission's next Open Meeting on April 14th at 9:00 am – and we need you to join us in person or online to demand that Commissioners step up to put our lands, waters, and health above polluters' profits. 🚨
RSVP to attend the Water Quality Control Commission's April 14th Open Meeting at the State Capitol (Room 309) in Santa Fe or online at the button below – our allies will follow up to provide all the talking points, details, and logistical information you'll need to show up and take action to defend New Mexico's water.
