We're Fighting Back Against Blackstone's Takeover: Join Us In The Fight This Month

Updated: Sep 9

Wall Street billionaires want to decide our future behind closed doors – but we've got other plans.

This month, we're coming together to stand against Blackstone's proposed acquisition of PNM and uplift the voices, solutions, and leadership of our communities as we take our fight all the way to New York City Climate Week.

Read on for 2 important opportunities to plug into the fight and show that our communities – not corporate billionaires or industry lobbyists – hold the power to determine what comes next.

🚨 WALL STREET BILLIONAIRES ARE TRYING TO BUY NEW MEXICO'S ENERGY FUTURE 🚨

In May, Blackstone – one of the world's largest private equity firms – announced plans to acquire PNM, our state's largest utility, and its parent company TXNM Energy, in an $11.5 billion deal. And last month, PNM filed at the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission to move that deal forward.

On the surface, this may sound like a routine corporate transaction. But if approved, this deal would hand control of our energy future over to Wall Street billionaires who have never set foot in our communities.

Blackstone's track record is clear: from pushing false climate "solutions" like hydrogen projects, to driving up housing costs, to backing a company with a documented child labor scandal, they've put profits over people every single time.

Here in New Mexico, we already know what that means: higher bills for our families, more closed-door decisions, and an energy system designed to line shareholders' pockets instead of serving the people.

As YUCCA Campaign Organizer Jonathon Juárez put it:

"Communities across New Mexico are fighting for energy democracy and a just transition rooted in real solutions. Blackstone's takeover is the exact opposite.

If approved, this deal would place our energy future in the hands of Wall Street billionaires, locking our communities into an energy system that answers to private equity shareholders instead of the people. Blackstone's record of pushing false solutions like hydrogen projects to corporate exploitation across sectors proves that they will put profits over people every time.

These kinds of takeovers drive up bills for our families, tying our energy system to water-intensive projects and AI buildouts that drain our resources while our communities pay the price. Billionaires meeting behind closed doors in Manhattan skyscrapers shouldn't be making decisions for communities they've never set foot in. We won't stand by and allow our future to be sold off to the highest bidder."

Blackstone's bid for PNM isn't about serving New Mexicans – it's part of a much bigger plan designed to lock in their profits.

Across the country, they're sinking billions into AI data centers that guzzle our energy and water, driving up bills and straining community resources. And right here in New Mexico, their subsidiary Tallgrass Energy has already been pushing for pipeline and energy projects on Indigenous lands and backing hydrogen schemes like blue hydrogen – a greenwashed false "solution" designed to extend the life of the fossil fuel industry instead of delivering the bold action our communities need.

For years, YUCCA and our movement allies in the No False Solutions Coalition have been fighting for an energy democracy, a just transition, and policies that put the power back in the hands of our communities. At YUCCA, we've launched our People's Climate Plan Campaign, mobilized thousands of young people across the state, and demanded the bold action we need to end our dependence on extractive industry.

Blackstone's takeover is the exact opposite of what we've been fighting for.

Instead of listening to the real solutions our communities have already put forward, this takeover threatens to lock us into an energy system that answers to billionaires in Manhattan skyscrapers, not the people who live here.

That's why this month, YUCCA and fellow members of the No False Solutions Coalition are taking our fight to New York City Climate Week to sound the alarm on the national stage and amplify our demands for climate justice rooted in real solutions led by the most impacted.

New Mexico is not for sale, and we need you with us in this fight. Help us spread the word and stay tuned for ways to take action to stop Blackstone's power grab.
